Happy New Year!

You can never have enough...

....batteries, that is! I hit a SuperTarget across town this afternoon in hopes of finding those darn crackers. The store was a wreck and stuff was piled everwhere. I managed to find a bow to use as a tree topper and that was it for the Christmas stuff.

But look what I found in the Dollar Spot aisle: Each one of these packs rang up as only $0.25! That's 18 4-packs of AA and 6 2-packs of D for just $6.00!

Cracker Barrel: 70% off Christmas clearance

I grabbed lunch at Cracker Barrel while I was out shopping today and noticed that they had their Christmas stuff on sale for 70% off, so I took a quick tour to see what I could find. They have some really cute stuff and something I couldn't resist (as if you couldn't tell from the pic).

  • "Christmas calories don't count" platter, $7.50 (regular price $24.99)
  • "Cookies for Santa" plate, $4.50 (regular price $12.99)
  • Watch ornament, $1.50 (regular $4.99)
  • 2 salt and pepper shaker sets, $1.50 each (regular $4.99 each)
That platter is going to be awesome for parties, and it's hand-painted ceramic - not the cheapie plastic ones. The pic doesn't do the plate justice either - it's also ceramic and parts of the design are raised. It's really cool. If you click on the pic, you can get a better look at the salt and pepper shaker sets. I thought the dog and the fire hydrant would make a great white elephant gift or gag gift. The Santa S&P set is adorable and I may just keep them instead of giving them away. Everything is ceramic and hand-painted and adorable.

Found Objects: Peelies, Tearpads, Hangtags and Blinkies

Every time I visit a grocery store (even if I'm going in for just a few items), I scour every aisle for coupons. The best coupons are often peelies (stickers on the product), hangtags (found hanging off the neck of a bottle - especially wine bottles!) or tearpads (pads of coupons found near the product shelf). Oh, and don't forget "blinkies" - those are tearpads that have a blinking light above them to get your attention.

This week, I found some pretty good Q's that are new, so you'll want to keep an eye out for these:

Tearin' Up Target 75% Christmas Clearance

I'm a little late in posting this, as I spent most of yesterday shopping the Christmas deals, grocery shopping and looking for "found objects" (posts on those later today). Target just marked their Christmas stuff down to 75% yesterday and the place was a madhouse! I ran into a couple of really nice ladies - one is a fellow couponer that had her cart so full that I don't think she could see to push it! (Hi, ladies!)

And just look at this adorable bag of Hersheys kisses that I found sitting all by itself on the back of a shelf. The poor thing had been forgotten and I rescued it. Good thing, because it scanned as only 82 cents and I used the $0.50 Target coupon to get it for $0.32!! I've never seen black Hershey's Kisses before, but I love the "have you been naughty or nice?" theme. Oh, behave!

Here's some more stuff that I found (the great deals are in red):

  • Christmas CD, $2.49 (regular price $9.99)
  • Triple Chocolate Twixels, FREE (regular price $3.49, sale price $0.87, used $1.00 Target coupon = FREE)
  • 3 Milky Way minis, $1.49 (regular price $2.89; used $1.00 off 3 Target coupon)
  • 6 Sharpie markers, $0.24 (regular price $0.99 each)
  • Rayovac 2-count D batteries, $0.50 (these are in the $1 Spot aisles)
  • Christmas towel gift set, $2.49 (regular price $9.99)
  • Chip\dip bowl, $0.99 (regular price $3.99)
  • Plastic utensils, $0.74 (regular price $2.99)
  • 3 packs of robe gift boxes, $0.49 (regular price $1.99)
  • Cookie cutter set, $1.74 (regular price $6.99)
  • Christmas cards, $0.50 (regular price $2.00)
  • 8 rolls gift wrap, $0.37 to $1.24 each (regular price $1.50 to $3.99 each)
  • Gift tags, $0.32 (regular price $1.29)
Total Before Sale\Coupons: $94.14
Total Spent: $23.65 (paid with $10 on gift cards, rest in cash)

There was lots left when I left, so don't be discouraged if you're just heading out today. I'm going to hit another Target today to see if I can find those Keebler moneymaker crackers.

Hen House Deals December 26th to January 5th

I love Hen House because (1) they double coupons up to $0.50 face value every day and (2) because they post the upcoming sales circular early on Tuesday afternoon for the sales that start on Wednesday. You can find those here. Just a reminder: you'll need a Hen House rewards card to get these prices. If you don't have one, you can apply for FREE at the Customer Service desk.

Oh, and if you take in your own reusable bags, you'll also get a $0.05 credit off your total bill for each one.

Here's this week's deals:Hen House actually has two ads out right now and I've got both of them listed below with coupon matchups. Please note that the first sale ends after tomrrow!

Updated Redbox FREE Movie Codes

You're not still paying to rent movies are you? You need to check out Redbox movie kiosks.

Redbox codes are usually good for one use per credit card. You can use the same code with a different credit card if you want another rental. Just select "Rent a DVD", pick out your movie, then select "Enter promo code" and enter the appropriate code to make your rental FREE. Some recent codes that are confirmed to be working (I used them today) are ACME25 and SPN5V9.

These codes are older but are also confirmed to still work:

ACME25REDBOX (first time customers)
DVDONME
BREAKROOM
DVDATWAG (Walgreens only)
31HyVee (Hyvee only)

And if you still need another code....you can also text "FIT" to 414141 and get a free movie rental code sent to your cell phone.

My totally frugal Tuesday

After 4 months of doing nothing but swinging a hammer and a paintbrush, my coupons are in complete disarray. My goal is to start off the new year with a completely organized coupon binder, all finances and tax documents in order, and a sparkling clean house. Doable, right? Maybe if I stay away from those darn after-Christmas sales.

I've just about got the coupons whipped into shape but it took most of yesterday and, in addition to feeling like I needed to pamper myself for a minute (okay, I just wanted some of those Christmas Cookie Yankie Candles at BBB), I also noticed that there are quite a few really good coupons expiring at the end of the month. I suppose now's the time for this:

WARNING! Check your coupons and don't let the good ones expire on 12/31!

So I set out on a VERY cold morning to see what I could get away with not paying for today. Ha! I'm not talking about shoplifting, of course. I'm talking about extreme couponing! Let me walk you through my day:

CVS #1
The pic above is both CVS trips combined. I picked up the $2.00 Biore moneymaker on my boyfriend's card, as well as the FREE Dawn Hand Renewal with Olay. I had one Home Made Simple $1.00 coupon for the Dawn, which made it FREE. The Biore was $1.00 after coupon, and I used a $0.99 ECB from last week.
Before sales\coupons: $9.98
Total OOP: -$0.01 + get back a $3.00 ECB = $2.99 profit!

CVS #2
This one had 2 rolls of the gift wrap I wanted (see pic above) and all their Christmas stuff is 50% off. That made it $1.99 a roll and I used my "$1.00 off any gift wrap" hangtag coupons from the Andre champagne . And, of course, I had to pick up the Biore moneymaker on my card. Oh, and a gallon of milk (not pictured). Used a $5.00 ECB to pay.
Before sales\coupons: $19.16
Total OOP: $1.17 on a gift card + got back a $3.00 ECB

Bed, Bath and Beyond
I headed here specifically for the candles and I was certain they'd be sold out. It actually looked like they had brought more out from the back and there were also different products - not just the tins and tumblers, but the reed diffusers, car hangies, etc. It was a virtual 50% off candlefest! The really small jar (the one on top in the pic) was originally $9.99 and the larger jars were originally $14.50 retail. You can do the math there on the discounted price. The $10.00 off $25.00 printable coupon worked for me with no problems.
Before sales\coupons: $53.48
Total OOP: $18.71.
This was the one part of my day that cost me serious money, but I'm thinking of this as early 2010 Christmas shopping.

Kohls
Had to return a long-sleeved KU shirt that I won at the company Christmas party. The tag said it cost $25.00 originally (which I doubt, because who pays retail at Kohls??!!) I ended up getting the current price of $11.25 on a gift card, which is pure profit.
Total OOP: +$11.25 profit!

Hobby Lobby
Returned some cake decorating supplies that I ended up not using over the holidays. I always get so ambitious and then somewhere along the way something goes horribly wrong. Anyway, $6.00 and change back on my credit card. I took a minute to see if I could spend that money on some more Christmas crap, but the really interesting thing is that they were packing up the entire store! The Noland Road store in Independence is getting ready to move to their new location (they open up there on Friday morning) and they have a TON of home decor stuff (lamps, geegaws, plates, etc.) on sale for 66% off!
Total OOP: $6.99 back on my credit card. I guess I can't really count this as profit.

QuikTrip
By now, I was getting hungry, so I swung by QuikTrip to get my FREE sandwich (coupon here - thanks, Hip2Save!). More snow is coming, so I decided to fill up the car and used a $10.00 gift card that I got for Christmas.
Total OOP: Big fat zero.

Redbox
I've been wanting to see that movie "Paranormal Activity" because I missed it when it was in the theaters, since we were busy with the house. It's a new release for Redbox as of today, so I swung by Hyvee to pick it up. They didn't have it! So I checked Price Chopper and they had it, as well as "Angels and Demons". Did you guys like these movies? Used two FREE codes - see my post here to get the details.
Total OOP: Zip, zero, zilch!

A&W
On the way home, I hit the local A&W for a FREE rootbeer float - I found this coupon way back in June, can you believe it?
Total OOP: Nothing.

So there you have it...I paid nothing for gas, milk, entertainment and lunch. And I got a jumpstart on next year's Christmas shopping. What a day!

Biore $2.00 Moneymaker at CVS

Here's yet another profitable deal to be had at CVS this week. You get back $3.00 ECB on Biore products this week and the Skin Preservation Wash is on clearance for $4.00, despite the shelf tags saying it's on sale for $6.49 at the two stores that I visited. Look for the pump bottle with UPC 0-1010013679-3 and then price scan it to make sure it's priced at $4.00. Now here's how you make this a moneymaker:

  • Biore Skin Preservation Wash, $4.00 and get back a $3.00 ECB
Use $3.00 coupon from the 10/11 SS
    Final Price: $2.00 profit!
Limit on this deal is 1 per card. A picture of the product can be seen in my other post on my totally frugal Tuesday today!

Ho ho ho...It's Christmas clearance time, you know!

Let me start by telling you what a bad person I am. I dragged my dear, sweet boyfriend out in the snow with me over the weekend with the intent of just going to get some dog food at Target and some free Ivory soap at CVS. It seemed like a simple, innocent thing. But the Christmas clearance sections kept calling me and before I knew it, I had dragged him to Walgreens, Target, a couple of CVSes, Williams Sonoma, and Bed, Bath and Beyond. He's lucky that we didn't end up at Hobby Lobby also (it was closed).

Walgreens
Walgreens was awesome, though. They're usually cleared out, but we hit the Walgreens on Noland in Independence and they had a TON of Christmas candy and stuff. You can check out some of what we got in the pic above.
  • Santa and snowman salt\pepper shakes, $0.69 for the pair
  • 4 ceramic "Christmas stocking", $0.25 each (great Secret Santa gifts!)
  • 4 Christmas cookie cutters, $0.25 each
  • Queen Anne's chocolate covered cherries, $0.99
  • 2 shirt\lingerie boxes 4-pack, $1.25 each
Target
I wasn't impressed with Target's clearance deals at all - I really though they would have some deeper discounts, but their prices seemed a little higher this year to start with. They had some cute wrapping paper but 20 sq ft at $3.99 is outrageous and even a 50% off sale didn't make it seem like that good of a deal. That is a SMALL roll! I did pick up some more shirt boxes at $1.00 for a 4-pack. Seems like we're always out of these, and I wish I had seen them before I bought the others at Walgreens.

CVS
CVS was no slouch either. Most of their Christmas stuff is marked 50% also. The candy was pretty well cleared out, but they have alot of stockings, lights and gift wrap left over. I used the $1.00 coupon that I found on the the Andre champagne bottles at Hyvee a couple of weeks ago to get the wrapping paper for $0.99 per roll (not pictured). I also picked up the miniature stockings for $0.50 each, thinking they would make great gift card or candy holders.

Bed, Bath and Beyond
Several weeks ago, I had stumbled across some red present bags at BB&B that were embroidered with "Smile if You've Been Naughty" and couldn't resist picking them up at $5.99 each. These were big hits over the holidays and really came in handy, since we have to haul a huge amount of presents to my mother's for Christmas. I doubt I could have even bought the material to make these myself for $5.99, so I thought it was great. But these are on sale for 50% off now, so I wanted to grab them for presents next year. The store we were at was out of them, so they called down to another store across town and had them hold their last 8 for us. Great customer service! You can see one of the green ones that I got in the pic above.

If you love Yankee Candles, this is the place to be. They've got all of the holiday scents and some non-holiday scents clearanced at 50% right now and there's a printable coupon for $10.00 off a $25.00 purchase. These make great gifts! Personally, I'm in love with the Christmas Cookie candles.

Williams Sonoma
WS is having their usual Christmas sale and there were some cute things there. However, my usual disclaimer is that you have to have a second income to shop there. My DBF has a fetish for expensive cutlery and stainless All Clad pans, so we buy all our stuff from there. They had the cutest measuring spoons and cups that look like miniature All Clad pans, so we HAD to get those. And I came across the Railway Cake Pan, which makes little cakes that look like a train when they're put together. Very expensive at $36.00, but I couldn't resist it either. We're frugal so that we can splurge sometimes, right? Isn't that adorable?

Walgreens January Savings Book is Available

When you head out to Walgreens for those great deals this week, make sure you keep an eye out for the new January coupon book. These are usually on a display at the front of the store with the weekly ad. You don't have to clip these and give them to cashier when you use them, so there's no need to take more than one. Also, remember that you can combine these with manufacturer coupons to get some great deals.

There are already some items on sale that you can use these coupons for. I've outlined some of them in my earlier post about Walgreens. If you use Revlon, get your scarf on and head out the door NOW. And here's a couple more moneymakers for you:

Happy Holidays from ThriftyPuppy!

Oh, I'm so excited....it's started already! We're going to have a white Christmas this year in Kansas City. Domino and I want to thank all of you that have joined us here at ThriftyPuppy this year. We have certainly had a lot of fun finding and posting "the deals" for you.

Now's the time to enjoy friends and family. And, in Domino's case, ripping up the discarded boxes, bows and wrapping paper. We're wishing you a very peaceful, love- and laughter-filled holiday!

Merry Christmas!

FREE On-Demand Movie Credit from Amazon

This is really cool....did you know you can buy and watch movies on-demand on Amazon? You can watch on either your computer or plug your computer into your TV (to watch on a bigger screen!) There's a code out now that will give you a $4 credit for the Amazon Video On Demand service. Most new movies are $2.99 and some older ones are only 99 cents! So you can get at least one free movie out of this deal.

Just go here to get the coupon code and credit it to your Amazon account. A pop-up box will appear and just follow the instructions - all you need to do is enter the code AVODGIFT where it asks for the promo code. The code needs to be used by January 3, 2010.
Thanks to the folks on SlickDeals for this one!

CVS: $5 off $20 Coupon Expires 12/26

This coupon comes to us courtesy of the Sacramento Bee. Despite the fact that it is here all the way from California, there are no restrictions on where it can be used. Watch the expiration, though - it expires on the 26th.

What a great way to make those CVS deals even better. Personally, I'm going to pick up some lipstick. :->

Walgreens Deals December 20th to 26th

I wasn't even going to post about Wags this week because there's just nothing interesting, but then I saw this deal for John Frieda Luxurious Volume products for only 49 cents!

Final Price: $0.49 and up (depending on product)

These would make great stocking stuffers!

Who doesn't like free groceries? I'm pretty sure that's one of the things I put on my list for Santa this year. So I'm so happy to report that my fellow KC couponer Kansas City Penny Pinchin' Mama is giving away a $20 gift card for Save-A-Lot stores. There are lots of these here in Kansas City. - in fact, I have one just blocks from my house!

Head over to the KCPPM blog to get your entries. That's right...there are 4, count 'em, FOUR ways to enter. The drawing will be held on Wednesday morning. Good luck!

Here's the good deals that I see in the flyers for this week. Let me know if I missed anything! Oh, and don't forget about the $5 off $30 coupon that you can get for taking a quiz on Medicare Part D. If you used this before, folks are reporting that it's working again.

FREE Sandwich at QuikTrip - and maybe FREE drink?

I'm not the only one that's back......the coupon for a FREE sandwich at QuikTrip is back also! If you have a QuikTrip gas station nearby (as we do here in Kansas City), then you need to snag this new coupon from Coupons.com! If you don't see it, use try using zip code 85003.

While you're there, look for another coupon for a FREE drink when you buy a sandwich. I haven' tried this myself, but I wonder if you could use them both at the same time?

Chickie, bawk BAWK

Here's a great example of how you can combine sales with coupons to get a great deal. This week at Hyvee, this coupon in the weekly ad promises 1/2 off a rotisserie chicken. However, with the Coke twin packs not on sale (full price is $3.49), this isn't a great deal. That is...until you throw some good coupons in the mix. If you look in the deli, you should find a display with the Coke twin packs on them and there should also be tearpad coupons for $1.00 off with a $4.00 deli purchase. Since the Hyvee rotisserie chickens are normally $4.99, we meet that requirement.

But let's make it even better. If you've got a Hen House nearby, check their twin packs for peelie coupons for a FREE twin-pack when you buy 1 twin-pack.

Final Total: Rotisserie chicken 1/2 off ($2.49) + Coke twin-pack ($2.49 after $1.00 coupon) + Coke twin-pack (FREE after coupon) = $4.98 for all this!

Found Objects: Target Edition

Lotsa lotsa peelies, tearpad, hangtags and blinkie coupons to be found in the stores right now! There are so many, in fact, that I'm going to do a post for each store so that it's easier to read. Here are the ones I found at Target on my very quick trip over the weekend. I didn't go through the entire row, so there are probaby more that I missed. If you found some good ones, I'd love to hear about it - leave a comment!

I'm baaaacccckkkkkkk!

We finally got the renovations done on our house and got the loan closed on December 1st. Thank goodness Congress pushed out the deadline on the first time homebuyer's tax credit because we closed one day late and wouldn't have been able to claim the credit otherwise!

So we've been laying around like a bunch of tired puppies since then. Working 14 hours a day on the weekends and 3 to 4 hours after work during the week can really wear you out. I'm just enjoying not having alot to do (other than catch up on clipping coupons) and shopping for the holidays. I wanted to post some of the great deals I found for Black Friday, but just couldn't get myself out of lazy mode.

I'm so glad to be back in the blogosphere, and I hope you'll continue to join me as we find some great deals!
